When I became the manager of the auto repair store that I am currently working at, I immediately noticed that something was wrong. First, employees were manually counting everything, whether it was cars, parts or hours, everything was counted by a member of staff and written down in a notebook.
This made no sense to me, especially because I had been transferred from a store that used a shop management system. After watching this go on for a couple of weeks and witnessing how inefficient the staff were because of it, I decided to make some changes. I had been brought to the store to improve it, and that’s what I intended to do.
How do you want your store to improve?
Before you invest in a shop management system it is essential that you know what your store needs. You can start by asking your staff, since they are the one’s taking on the bulk of the work, they are more likely to know what needs improving. Of course, you will also have your own issues that you can add to the list. Do your research.
So now that you know what you need, it’s time to do some research and find out what’s out there. I used a shop management system at my old store, but I knew we needed something a bit different, so I started doing some research on what was available. This is an important step in the process because there are many companies selling software, but they might not provide what you need.
A free trial
Once you’ve narrowed a few management software systems, you want to make sure that the one you choose offers a free trial. First, because there are too many charlatans out there who will promise you the world but won’t deliver. Second, because there are some companies who will get you to sign a contract, but you have to purchase add on products for the system to benefit your store; this can get very expensive. To eliminate these problem, a free trial is your answer. I chose Tekmetric management software system because they are offering a no strings attached free trial for the rest of 2018. I didn’t have to sign a contract, and I have access to the entire system as if I am a paying customer.
No more manual labor
There are many ways a management software system will improve your store, but after asking my employees what they felt had improved the most, there was a unanimous decision of no more manual labor. This was something that my staff hated the most, having to count and do everything manually. Not only did it slow them down, but it also lowered morale in the workplace because they absolutely hated doing it.
My store is a much better place since we started using software, productivity has improved, things get done a lot quicker and most importantly, there has been a dramatic 35% increase in profit, and we have only been using the system for the past 5 months.
